KNOW THE BASIC FUNCTIONS AND COMMANDS OF THE SQL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE

Desiliciouskitchen-Today’s programming languages are very diverse and are used to develop various types of applications for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices. Of every type of programming language, SQL is one of the choices to create a database system. For now, many developers are using SQL to assist in designing the database requirements of the application. In this article, we will discuss about the use of SQL and the kinds of basic commands used.

Understanding Structured Query Language

Structured Query Language or SQL is a query language designed to assist in retrieving and managing information in a database. For those who are still beginners in the IT world, it is usually defined as the language used to access data in a relational basis. Associated with SQL standardization has existed since 1986 and was initialized by ANSI (American National Standard Institute). Until now, there are many servers that can interpret SQL, both from databases and software.

SQL history

In June 1970 or about 50 years already, an article from Jhonny Oracle who is a researcher from Oracle discusses the meaning of SQL. And then came the term SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language). And just a short time later, IBM also launched a relational database project.

Because the spelling is too difficult, it is replaced by the name SQL. And after the standardization process was completed in 1986, SQL underwent an overhaul in 1989. And in 1992 the SQL92 version appeared and in 1999 it was also updated with the name SQL99 version. However, the most referenced in the IT world is the SQL92 version.

SQL Functions

SQL query language has several functions. The following is an explanation of the functions of this programming language.

1. Can Manipulate and Access Database

The first function is to use SQL, so we can access the database by writing some commands according to the specified query. For example, you can create, add, update, and delete databases, tables, and some information that the system does not need.

2. Able to Execute Query

The second function is capable of executing various existing queries. The use of the query input aims to give direct orders to the system to be able to manage a database system. An example of some query execution is the function trigger, alter, grant, and so on.

3. Can Set User Access Rights

And the last function is to manage and manage the permissions requirements of tables, views, and procedures on the database. The purpose of this access right is to limit user access according to the needs of the system being implemented.

SQL Basic Command

There are several kinds of basic commands that you should know to learn SQL for beginners. Here are some of the descriptions.

1. Data Definition Language (DDL)

This command is the most basic command in the SQL language. The purpose of using DDL is to structure the database properly. Then the type of DDL is divided into five parts, including the following.

Create

The create command is used to create a new database. You can write the query ‘CREATE DATABASE database_name’.

Alter

The alter command is used to modify the structure of a pre-existing table. Usually used to change or delete columns, change table names, and so on.

Rename

The rename command is used to rename the previously created table. You can write the query ‘RENAME TABLE old_table_name TO new_table_name’.

Drop

The drop command has a function to delete databases, tables, columns, to the index section.

Show

The last DDL command is the show command which serves to display the existing table data.

2. Data Manipulation Language (DML)

The definition of DML is an SQL command that aims to manipulate data in the database. The command from the DML is divided into four parts, namely:

Insert

The first DML command is used to insert a new data record into a table.

Select

The select command is used to display or retrieve data from a table. You can also retrieve data from different tables by using relation functions.

Updates

The update command aims to change the existing data record (data update). You can write this command if there is an incorrect input process on your record.

Delete

The last DML command is used to delete data records that have been previously created in a table.

3. Data Control Language (DCL)

The last basic command is DCL, which is used to set what permissions the user has. DCL is divided into two types, namely:

Grant

The first DCL command is grant, which is a command that can be performed by the database admin to grant access to other users.

Revoke

For the second DCL command, which is the opposite of the previous command, it functions to revoke or remove access rights for certain users according to the wishes of the database admin.

On the other hand, there is a technique that can abuse security vulnerabilities in SQL in an application’s database. The technique is called SQL Injection, which is also a favorite of a hacker to hack a program or system easily. This can occur due to errors in the input process that are not filtered properly and the use of the wrong form.

Jobs That Require SQL

There are several jobs in the IT world that are closely related to SQL. The following are some examples of jobs that require a developer to master this language.

1. Database Administrator

Database administrator is one of the jobs has a strong relationship with the query language. A Database Administrator (DBA) must be able to properly structure the database for business needs and be able to manage database access properly.

2. Data Scientist

Data scientists are also very closely related to the use of SQL, where this job is responsible for creating databases, processing data, and presenting data products.

3. Big Data Architect

Big data architect is a job that is currently needed by large companies or startups to manage large-scale data needs.

Conclusion
• SQL is a query language used to design and create database structures related to application development needs.
• There are several basic commands for implementing Structured Query Language, namely DDL, DML, and DCL.
• Actually, every programmer, especially in the backend field, is required to master SQL, but there are several special jobs related to the use of this language, namely database administrator, data scientist, and big data architect.
